Who I Am Today

I am Cammy Kao. Having spent most of my adulthood in the San Francisco Bay Area, currently I reside in Houston. I give math lessons to a middle schooler in Palo Alto who is close to me. In art classes, I am learning to work with soft pastels. Tennis I follow at Cam Williams’ Tennis Talk, with Jannik Sinner being my favorite player. This article about Sinner’s legal case I consider rare for being well-written. I admire literature, recently enjoying short stories. “The Luck of Roaring Camp” by Bret Harte, published in 1868, touches me with its portrayal of a child. For the same reason, I like the documentary short “Instruments of a Beating Heart” (2024). Backup bands impress me, such as the ones here for Diana Ross, Rick Astley (live), Whitney Houston (live), and Sheryl Crow (live). Here are my favorite videos on YouTube.

“I didn’t recognize her voice.”

I am someone with nothing to prove. Teaching math for the love of math, without prioritizing performance over the person, creates a safe environment for my students to do math.

A lifelong agnostic, I have become a member of the First Unitarian Univeralist Church of Houston. The people there are committed and insightful.

In middle age, often I ask myself what profession I was meant to pursue during my youth. Nearing an answer, I do not know how I could have gotten there as a young person. I was not conscious of my interests. Yet the satisfaction brought by math when a correct answer is obtained appears to have grounded me throughout my education. Together with children I may now pursue this endeavor.
